There are different types of roofing materials used for all the different types of roofs.

When selecting a roofer you want to make sure that the roofer will follow the manufacturers directions in regards to the correct installation methods of the roofing material. To not follow the installation guidelines for installing the roof the manufactures warranty on the materials will be voided.

One example that comes up is the installation of asphalt or fiberglass type shingles on a roof slope less than a 3/12 pitch. On roofs that are flat or low slope standard shingles are not designed for use on slopes so low. Installing good material in a way that is not recommended will void any warranty issued by the manufacturer of the roofing materials.  When looking a roofer or a roofing company in the Columbus Ohio area be sure to ask if they adhere to the manufacturers installation guidelines. By following the guidelines the roofer will be protecting you in the event there is a manufacturers defect in the roofing materials (shingles)

Approximately 80% of the roofs installed in the Columbus Ohio area are asphalt / fiberglass shingles.  Of those some are the regular three tab shingles and some are the longer lasting three dimensional shingles.

These need a roof slope (pitch) of 3/12 or steeper. to help ensure against leaks.

On roofs that are considered low slope or flat the material that should be used is a membrane type roof. Also called a rubber roof.

Metal roofs are the other type frequently installed in Ohio. The styles of metal roofs have greatly improved in the decade and now come in a variety of colors.

Slate shingles are another roofing material that is more commonly found on older homes. Slate has become a specialized roofing material and the expense of replacing a slate roof has naturally increased.

If a person likes the look of slate but wants to avoid the expense of slate roofing shingles that are alternatives that are available.
